Collecting on a budget

I already know that my collection will never be complete. For starters i don’t have the financial capability to get in there with the big guys when some of the most rare albums appear on ebay or other sites. Furthermore, and this might be the primary reason, i don’t think i have a sufficiently understanding girlfriend. If i ever do get a hold of the Ratfab record i’ll most definately have to lie about what i payed for it.

So what’s my goal? And what might be the general goal of collecting on a budget? Like most other collectors i offcourse strive to find original issues in as good condition as possible. Unfortunately once you get started it’s quite easy to start wanting as many covers as possible in as short amount of time as possible, at least that was the case for me. This has resulted in a couple of stupid buys a while back and i have a couple of covers that would really need an upgrade. I guess it’s true what they say about buy cheap – pay twice.

Besides this i’ve also tried to build my collection starting with the covers i think look the best. Unfortunately many of these are some of the most rare covers so a few i’m still trying to find a in other cases i’ve had to resort to buying reissues. Some of these reissues also sell quite high so in those cases you sometimes end up in the dilemma of getting a reissue in perfect condition or a original issue in far from perfect condition. For example there’s a reissue of Trombone by Three on ebay right now for $75, the original issue though comes with an entirely different price tag.

It’s not easy when it’s hard to know what to do.
